After two weeks in Burgundy packed with visits, here are our first impressions of the 2023s:
They are delicious! The reds are full of raspberry and strawberry fruit, juicy supple tannins and terroir precision. The whites are juicy and succulent, the richness balanced by vibrant acidity and transparent stony minerality. The vintage is so forward and poised that we often wanted to siphon off ‘barrel samples’ for ‘tasting’ at dinner.
While it does not have the concentration and power of 2020 or 2022, it more than makes up for with charm and energy: these are wines that will make you fall in love with Burgundy all over again. And they have a serious side too: drinkability now does not mean that they won’t last. They have stuffing and balance to develop over many years.
