Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin' is back in partnership with Edinburgh Tradfest, offering a day of workshops for young musicians on 4th May 2026, with support from the William Grant Foundation.
This is a chance for young people to develop their skills, play alongside other young musicians, sing, write songs, and learn new tunes.
We're looking for instrumentalists and singers aged 12-17 at roughly intermediate level. This is around two or more years' experience — who are curious about folk music and keen to give it a go.
The workshops will be geared towards creating a short, fun ensemble piece, with music provided where needed alongside learning by ear.
No background in traditional music? No problem. The day will be split into two sessions: 11am–12:30pm and 1:30–3pm. They are open to anyone who's comfortable on their instrument, whatever style they've come from. We'd love you to join us for the full day, but if you can only make one session, you're still very welcome. Just bring yourself — and your instrument.
Tutors for the day are Lori Watson and Phil Alexander.
