Unravelling celebrates artists from the wider East and South East Asian (ESEA) creative community in Greater Manchester. This group exhibition unravels the connections that shape perspectives of heritage and identity. Through diverse practices, the artworks reveal the artist’s individual relationships to home, family, methods of making, folklore, and the preservation, adaptation, or rejection of tradition.
Thread serves as both material and metaphor in a number of ESEA cultures. Across Chinese, Hong Kong, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditions, the red thread represents an invisible bond connecting those destined to meet despite time, distance, or circumstance. In Thailand, a sacred thread used in Buddhist practices symbolises protection with red threads also associated with luck and warding off negative energy. Together, these shared yet distinct traditions reflect the exhibition itself: an unwinding of individual narratives revealing how cultural connections continue to evolve across generations, borders, and communities.
